Today I am happy to share one of my latest work. I have been busy with some interesting commissions that I will reveal very soon in my next coming posts.
In the mean time, today I like to share what I have created out of a beautiful nature find, a unique piece of “Eucalyptus Tree Bark” I have found this piece near the tree where it belonged, it did speak to me and I took it. I love the shape is not a flat piece it is curved and is about 13 inches long and 4.5 inches wide in the widest part. This piece is in perfect conditions the grain has a lovely natural white patina. I did nothing to it than just passing a soft cloth to brush off eventual dust. Sorry I haven’t taken a photo of the natural bark before drawing, I guess I was too excited and inspired to start working on it.
What turned out is a mysterious face and ethereal portrait, created with only a black and a white Ink pens. I loved and enjoyed drawing this piece very much. Following the natural grain of the wood and letting the curves lead my drawing allowing this face to come alive and out to us. It is a one of a kind piece, I don’t have a title yet but you all can help me to find one, you can tell me in the comments what do you see in her expression? What she is telling you? Your help is very much appreciated and together we can find a title for her.
Nature is a great source of inspiration in many ways and especially in Art because it stimulates your creativity helping you to relax and feel grounded. When you are able to feel connected with the earth, you are and feel centered and balanced letting go negativity no matter what’s going on around you. I love nature in all the aspects and benefits it give us. I based my life on nature and natural remedies to take care myself health wise and successfully. I enjoy always time spent outdoor it is so precious walking in the wood or enjoying a walk on the shore near the ocean, I like hiking and exploring places in appreciation of what often we take for granted.
Nature is precious and inspire me in many ways and in all the mediums I work with. I am always on the look out to find interesting things that I can create with. I also have based my whole Jewelry Collection on nature. I am so happy when I can find interesting and inspiring pieces as gift of nature to collect and create with.
I love leaves, tree bark, gemstones, fossils, sea shells, driftwood, flowers, branches and more. I love to salvage these precious finds and give them a new life and purpose through my art.

Today post feature the release of my new watercolor-graphite painting having the title of “Mystical Multitude”. This is the finished piece of the work in progress that who is following me on Instagram @carolinarussoart already has seen this painting progressing through my latest posts. I am happy how it turned out and If you missed the stages, you can see here the pencil sketch where my inspiration and work begin, actually my starting sketch was the face in the center. This time I wanted to do something different and combine two mediums together and the use of different skills in one painting. I love graphite for the soft tone and shades of grey with the possibility to build up the color with more depth as needed. I felt that would’ve been beautiful combined with the transparency of watercolor using a delicate color palette.
This is the beginning of the watercolor layering stage. I truly enjoyed to create this painting for the variety of expressions in the beautiful faces and for the mixed media technique. I did work for several days on it, there are lots of details and the layering in between watercolors and graphite. The paper I used it is a large size pad it is 9 x 12 inches, approx. 22.9 x 30.5 centimeters.
“For this portrait I gave the title“Mystical Multitude” the meaning behind the painting is inspired by how our emotions are flowing together in our reality, how feelings can transport us in many directions and how much we emotionally change. This portrait shows three different faces of women, but in a mystical and dreamy way it represents one person, the same woman in different moments and emotional state of her life, going through, transformation and changes”.
I love the softness and transparency of the watercolors and I left it as pure watercolor without the ink outline that usually distinguish most of my paintings but using graphite and colored pencils for more definition.

Time after time I like to look back at my old watercolor paintings. I like to see how much my art change and my skills grow during the years! Recently I came across this painting that I made in 2013 around this time of the year. It is almost four years ago and I like to re-share it with you all. This painting is very dear to me because is a view of “Venice” Venezia in Italian, it is one beautiful city in Italy, my native country! It is a view of Venice that I just painted out of my visual memory without any photo reference. It is a loose watercolor, I remember I was practicing the loose technique so hard to master! I know there is a lot that I could’ve done better, it was a fast painting and somehow, I am pleased with how this painting turned out! I think I was able to capture the feeling and essence of Venice. If you have been to Venice then maybe you recognize this view. I wasn’t born in Venice it’s not my hometown. I was born in Naples another beautiful city on the sea. That’s why I love the ocean so much and I love to paint water, there is something about water that it is so inspiring to me in many ways, artistically and not. I like the reflections and the colors. I often base my palette on the beautiful range of colors of the sea. The sea and the ocean are very often captured also in my photography!
Details about Watercolor: I used French Artists Watercolors Sennelier l’Aguarelle and I painted on a Canson watercolor paper 140 lb cold press.

From the beginning of October I have been very busy creating and drawing daily, participating to the Worldwide InkTober event. But I also loved and found some time to create a watercolor Ink painting that is a collectible illustration, dedicated to The Twilight Sadamazing band from Scotland that I am a huge fan. My drawing is inspired by some of their images used on album covers. I just came out with my own creative interpretation and wanted to dedicate it to The Twilight Sad and to all the fans that love them and enjoy their music. They all know what this painting is all about.
