Venice Italy in Watercolors!

Venezia - Italy
Venezia Italy – Original Watercolor – Copyright ©Carolina Russo

An oldie watercolor painting of Venice….

Time after time I like to look back at my old watercolor paintings.  I like to see how much my art change and my skills grow during the years!  Recently I came across this painting that I made in 2013 around this time of the year. It is almost four years ago and I like to re-share it with you all. This painting is very dear to me because is a view of “Venice” Venezia in Italian,  it is one beautiful city  in Italy, my native country!
It is a view of Venice that I just painted out of my visual memory without any photo reference. It is a loose watercolor, I remember I was practicing the loose technique so hard to master! I know there is a lot that I could’ve done better, it was a fast painting and somehow, I am pleased with how this painting turned out!  I think I was able to capture the feeling and essence of Venice. If you have been to Venice then maybe you recognize this view. I wasn’t born in Venice it’s not my hometown. I was born in Naples another beautiful city on the sea. That’s why I love the ocean so much and  I love to paint water, there is something about water that it is so inspiring to me in many ways, artistically and not. I like the reflections and the colors. I often base my palette on the beautiful range of colors of the sea.  The sea and the ocean are very often captured also in my photography!

Details about Watercolor:
I used  French Artists Watercolors  Sennelier  l’Aguarelle and I painted on a Canson watercolor paper 140 lb cold press.

– Winter Wonderland – Day 12  CAKE

Winter Wonderland 31 Days 31 Paintings Challenge!!!

Today is day 12/31 Charlie’s  prompt list says  “CAKE”  I am joining  doodlewash  if you like to do watercolor painting or ink-wash or sketches you can still join in to this December Challenge, you’re invited! Check the doodlewash link!

For today painting a cake I decided to paint a Panettone which  is a traditional dessert for Christmas in Italy my native country!  I painted the two most common. The one on the left is called “Traditional Panettone” let’s say it is the classic original, in the past existed only that one, made in a dome shape it is very good and soft with a touch of candied raisins and citrus inside! Delicious I love both of them. The second on the right side of my painting is called “Pandoro” the name translation means gold bread  it takes the name from the beautiful soft feeling and the color, this one also is served with powder sugar sprinkled on top and looks like a snowy mountain! The best way to serve them is to warm the up a little in the oven before serving, they are great anytime with coffee, champagne or a sweet wine  every house in Italy have panettone during the Holidays until the New Year which people have it a midnight with champagne celebrating the new year. I made sure this year to have found them both of the known brand I used to have with my family in Italy. 🙂 Buon Natale! ❤

Details about my watercolors:
watercolors are outlined with black and white ink pens. I used  French Artists Watercolors  Sennelier  l’Aguarelle 12 demi-godets half-pans travel metal box  Ink pens used  Pigma Micron Black ink #02, white Uni-ball Signo gel pen and a black ink  Pilot Prera fountain pen fine nib . I painted on a small 3.5 x 5.5 inches mixed media sketchbook.

I already mentioned in another post that last August 22nd has been 14 years that I live here in California. My illustration is a way to remember that long day I traveled from Naples my City, via London to Los Angeles, it took approximately 20 hour it was an adventure for sure! 😉

National Amaretto Day!

Amaretto
Amaretto – Original Watercolor ©Carolina Russo

Today for April month celebrations I celebrate National Amaretto Day!

I didn’t know until today that was existing an unofficial National holiday dedicated to the Amaretto liqueur and absolutely couldn’t miss this one since the Amaretto antique origins are from my beautiful native country Italy! Ciao mia Bella Italia!!!

AmarettoSketch
Amaretto Italy – Original Watercolor ©Carolina Russo

The word Amaretto means “little bitter” is created infusing almonds or apricots seeds or both together in brandy or pure alcohol obtaining a delicious almond a little bitter natural flavored liqueur mostly served after dinner in a pretty old-fashioned glass it pair very well, served with holiday foods and desserts, that have nutty and warm spice undertones of cinnamon, clove and nutmeg. Amaretto it is also used as base to prepare a variety of cold and hot cocktails. Also well-known are the Amaretto cookies.

Amaretto is a very antique liqueur  there is an old Italian legend saying that was created from a woman living in the Italian city of Saronno in the 1525 she prepared the Amaretto in appreciation giving it as modest gift to a Church commissioned Artist one of Leonardo da Vinci’s pupils that had to paint the Sanctuary frescoes. The woman was the muse that inspired the Artist when he had to paint the Virgin Mary.

My watercolor shows the bottle of a well-known Italian Amaretto brand but for creativity I wanted to write “Amaretto Italy” I haven’t written the brands name I just left that out to the imagination! LOL
A nice old-fashioned glass and some good Amaretto cookies!
It was fun to doodle this I hope that you enjoy!

Details about my doodlewash:
watercolor with black ink finish. I used one of my favorite French Artists Watercolors  Sennelier  l’Aguarelle 12 demi-godets half-pans travel metal box  and Pigma Micron black Ink pen #005 and #05 over a Mixed Media  Sketchbook!

Photography – A Stunning Element

Wiltern_Ceiling

Los Angeles – The Wiltern Theatre

a beautiful 1930 Art Deco’ architecture considered one of the finest examples in United States, salvaged and restored from neglect and decay it is a symbol of history and Art preservation for the City of Los Angeles. The theatre is located inside the green-turquoise  Pellissier Building you can read more about the interesting history here.

My photo  shows details of the stunning and dramatic element featured on the ceiling overlooking the box-office at the entrance. I love the angle I was able to capture and the lighting in contrast with the dark shade creating a beautiful effect of “chiaroscuro” it seems almost a monochrome. I love this photo and I hope you do to!

In June 2015  I had the privilege to attend a great concert in this beautiful venue, you can read my post “A Magical Evening of Guitars”. It was a wonderful experience for me as an artist to see the beauty of this historical theatre. The more I was looking around the more I felt I was back in time. As soon I walked inside the magnificent decorated oval-shaped lobby, I was imagining how many shows have been hosted in such great place during the 1930s and 40s until our days, all the amazing artists that have performed there. I could visualize all the people walking around the lobby wearing their fancy hats and fashionable outfits of that era.  The ceilings inside are amazing and all decorated with beautiful elements, over the walls there are shapes of beautiful flowers artistically painted. One of the most striking element of the interior design is a huge sunburst placed on the ceiling of the auditorium,  each ray is created as its own Art Deco skyscraper. I was there attending a modern Rock Concert having the feeling to be in an old-fashioned historical venue, where I was back in time and into the modern era at the same time, it was amazing! I felt a great vibe. My native country is Italy, I grow up surrounded by the most amazing Art and architecture  hundred and hundred of years of Art history are still alive throughout the magnificent buildings, sculptures, paintings on almost every city in Italy because it is very important to preserve and salvage our Art. I am glad that The Wiltern Theatre is an example of preservation here in US and for sure it is a place to visit in Los Angeles if you interested in Art and Architecture and nonetheless a great vibe-filled and intimate venue for great concerts.

I hope that you enjoyed my photography and this post!
There is any special Art-preserved place in your city?
Feel free to talk about it in the comments!

Thank you for sharing 😉

My Paintings

Watercolors

Venezia - Italy

I was organizing some of my watercolors and I came across this painting I made two years ago. It is a view of Venice in Italy just painted out of my visual memory. I love to paint water, there is something about water that it is so inspiring to me in many ways, artistically and not. I like the reflections and the colors. I base my palette on the beautiful range of colors of the sea, or lakes and the reflection of the sky in it.  Thematically when I paint my artwork range from seascapes, landscapes, still life, abstract and whatever inspire me...
