Venice Italy in Watercolors!

Venezia - Italy
Venezia Italy – Original Watercolor – Copyright ©Carolina Russo

An oldie watercolor painting of Venice….

Time after time I like to look back at my old watercolor paintings.  I like to see how much my art change and my skills grow during the years!  Recently I came across this painting that I made in 2013 around this time of the year. It is almost four years ago and I like to re-share it with you all. This painting is very dear to me because is a view of “Venice” Venezia in Italian,  it is one beautiful city  in Italy, my native country!
It is a view of Venice that I just painted out of my visual memory without any photo reference. It is a loose watercolor, I remember I was practicing the loose technique so hard to master! I know there is a lot that I could’ve done better, it was a fast painting and somehow, I am pleased with how this painting turned out!  I think I was able to capture the feeling and essence of Venice. If you have been to Venice then maybe you recognize this view. I wasn’t born in Venice it’s not my hometown. I was born in Naples another beautiful city on the sea. That’s why I love the ocean so much and  I love to paint water, there is something about water that it is so inspiring to me in many ways, artistically and not. I like the reflections and the colors. I often base my palette on the beautiful range of colors of the sea.  The sea and the ocean are very often captured also in my photography!

Details about Watercolor:
I used  French Artists Watercolors  Sennelier  l’Aguarelle and I painted on a Canson watercolor paper 140 lb cold press.

You can see more of my Paintings visiting my  GALLERY  there are several Galleries you find  them in the drop down menu under Watercolors.

I am Carolina Russo from Southern California (follow me on my Blog, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest!). I am very excited and happy to be a Guest Doodlewasher! This blog is fantastic! I admire Charlie’s creativity and his doodlewashes are beautiful and inspiring. I am so proud to be able to say that I am one of the featured on Doodlewash. Thank you Charlie for having me here.

I was born and raised in Italy, the beautiful country where I have been surrounded by Italian art, creativity, history, Mediterranean traditions and European influences. My father is an artist and I grew up observing and being amazed by his oil paintings. I knew since I was a child that I wanted to be an artist. I enjoyed drawing, coloring and creating things since a very early age.

Today for April Celebration is National Peace Rose Day!

I know it is a bit late today I had a little time and I made my Peace Rose to honor this beautiful National Day.
I love roses, all of them, and I enjoyed to watercolor this symbolic one, for the beautiful colors and interesting history facts behind it.

History
Each year on April 29th we recognize National Peace Rose Day.   The day is set aside to honor the “Peace” rose, a well-known and fruitful garden rose.

The light yellow to large cream-colored flowers of the Peace rose have slightly flushed crimson pink petal edges.  It is a hybrid tea rose that is hardy, vigorous and highly resistant to disease.

French horticulturist Francis Meilland, developed the Peace rose between 1935 and 1939.  When Meilland foresaw the German invasion of France, to protect the new rose, he sent cutting to his friends in Italy, Turkey, Germany and the United States. It is believed these cuttings were sent to the United States on the last plane available before the German invasion.

The rose received different names in each country it was sent.  In France, it was called “Madame A. Meilland” in honor of the breeder’s mother.  In Italy, it was called Gioia, meaning Joy.  In Germany, the name of the rose was Gloria Dei, for glory to God. In the United States, the rose was named Peace.

As the Second World War was coming to a close in Europe, the trade name “Peace” was publicly announced on April 29, 1945, the name it was given in the United States.

Later in 1945, Peace roses were given to each delegate at the inaugural meeting of the United Nations, in San Francisco, with a note that read:  “We hope the Peace rose will influence men’s thoughts for everlasting world peace.”  (source NationalCalendar)

National Tell A Story Day

Peaceful
Peaceful – Original Watercolor ©Carolina Russo

Deep Water

Surrounded by the blue deepest water. The reflections of floating emotions, loaded the mind and body in a fearless state.Tranquillity and silence flying through the broken branches of a life experience, were glowing under the warm sunlight.
Suddenly warm rain drops of happiness joined the deep water becoming one.

Happy Earth Day!!!

Today I am celebrating this day thinking about how important it is to preserve our Earth, respect the Nature and environment.

I painted these flowers with pure colors from Nature without using the classic watercolor pans.

I wrote a post explaining all the interesting details about my experiment painting with Nature and I will link it here for you to read  “Watercolors from Nature”

National Earth Day is observed each year on April 22.

National Earth Day is held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Every year around the world, Earth Day organizers promote green campaigns to save the Earth.

Details about my doodlewash:
I painted with colors that I experimented using straight from Nature. The yellow is Turmeric powder mixed with water, the Pink is juice from the Dragon fruit straight from the fruit and Pigma Micron black Ink pen #005 and #05 over a watercolor paper pad cold press 140 lb by Strathmore.

National Amaretto Day!

Amaretto
Amaretto – Original Watercolor ©Carolina Russo

Today for April month celebrations I celebrate National Amaretto Day!

I didn’t know until today that was existing an unofficial National holiday dedicated to the Amaretto liqueur and absolutely couldn’t miss this one since the Amaretto antique origins are from my beautiful native country Italy! Ciao mia Bella Italia!!!

AmarettoSketch
Amaretto Italy – Original Watercolor ©Carolina Russo

The word Amaretto means “little bitter” is created infusing almonds or apricots seeds or both together in brandy or pure alcohol obtaining a delicious almond a little bitter natural flavored liqueur mostly served after dinner in a pretty old-fashioned glass it pair very well, served with holiday foods and desserts, that have nutty and warm spice undertones of cinnamon, clove and nutmeg. Amaretto it is also used as base to prepare a variety of cold and hot cocktails. Also well-known are the Amaretto cookies.

Amaretto is a very antique liqueur  there is an old Italian legend saying that was created from a woman living in the Italian city of Saronno in the 1525 she prepared the Amaretto in appreciation giving it as modest gift to a Church commissioned Artist one of Leonardo da Vinci’s pupils that had to paint the Sanctuary frescoes. The woman was the muse that inspired the Artist when he had to paint the Virgin Mary.

My watercolor shows the bottle of a well-known Italian Amaretto brand but for creativity I wanted to write “Amaretto Italy” I haven’t written the brands name I just left that out to the imagination! LOL
A nice old-fashioned glass and some good Amaretto cookies!
It was fun to doodle this I hope that you enjoy!

April Celebration! #FindaRainbowDay

Double Rainbow
Double Rainbow

Double Rainbow
Double Rainbow

The Month of April is filled with interesting National and International Celebrating Days!

I am participating to the “Celebration” choosing some of the days that are inspiring to me and post some of my work like my own photos, watercolors, sketches, poetry. I got inspired to do this from my dear Doodlewasher friend Charlie O’Shields at Doodlewash I will join him some days during this month with my watercolors and tag my image #doodlewashaday  if anyone that love doodlewash wants to join please visit his post here  it would be fun!

Today is April 3rd and is “Find a Rainbow Day”

I am celebrating this special National Day with my Photography posting two lovely photos of double rainbows that I was lucky enough to be at the right time at the right spot when the beautiful rainbows appeared in the sky. The first photo was taken in 2013 I like how clear the colors of the main rainbow are sadly the second rainbow is very light to see in both photos but is there.

The second photo was taken on November 2nd 2015 is a photo very dear to me because this beautiful double rainbow appeared about 30 minutes after my dog Mojo died exactly 5 months ago yesterday! That day I felt like the rainbow was a sign from above from Mojo saying that she was happy.  I wanted to capture that moment and I took the photo with my phone.

April is also Poetry Month  and the 17th is National Hiku Poetry Day let’s get inspired and celebrate!

The following two sites are great resources for the “official” days that people are celebrating somewhere in the world: National Day Calendar and Days of the Year. If you like to celebrate in the way that best inspire you just choose a date National or International and let your creativity flow! 😉

Have a wonderful and colorful National Rainbow Day!

Drawing Summer in my Sketch Book…

SUMMER
SUMMER

One afternoon during this week, I was in the drawing mode!

So I decided that since we are in the middle of Summer, I should be drawing something in my Sketch Book in regard to this beautiful and loved Season…bringing up happy feelings, relaxing time and lovely days on the beach…
This Sketch show I think pretty much what Summer can give us…the beautiful ocean, colorful flowers, sands and palms trees especially here where I am in California there are lots of palm trees not really on the beach but all over around!

Summer Sketch July 2015
Summer Sketch July 2015

To go a bit into the details, I quickly sketched first with a pencil few very light lines just to give me an idea. I rarely sketch anything when I work on my watercolor paintings. In this sketch I used watercolor pencils and then blended with Aqua Flow water brushes, the result turned out pretty nice! I went over with a black ink Pigma Micron pen 0.3 to finish.

I hope that you enjoyed this and I wish you all a wonderful and magic SUMMER!
